Disappointment for UConn

Not many players can dominate a game like Denard Robinson did. It reminded of Texas’ Vince Young against USC in the Rose Bowl for the BCS title several years ago. Huskies had no answer for this guy.

Count me as stunned they got steamrolled like that. They had some chances, but did you ever think they were going to stop Robinson?

I don’t know where Rich Rodriguez finds these guys, but 383 of Michigan’s 473 yards of offense is about as devastating as it gets.

“Rich’s thing is to have a running quarterback,” Edsall said. “He wants to run the football and do some things. Denard Robinson can do those things.

He did this at Wes Virginia with Pat White — I am not saying he is Pat White — but with time he will have a chance to be a very very good quarterback.

“Those guys are tough to stop. You have to have fast guys and quick guys to make space in there. Deja Vu all over again. Pat White, third and 15 and the QB draw and here we go again.”

The key here is the defensive line. The Huskies had no penetration from its front four. Trevardo Williams and Jesse Joseph made some plays, but the tackles Twyon Martin and Kendall Reyes were absolutely silent most of the game. They needed to get in the backfield and not allow Robinson to gain steam.

It made for a terrible time defending. Greg Lloyd can’t stand it.

“That was irritating to play against somebody like him,” linebacker Greg Lloyd said. “It’s all about getting to the ball and making plays. It comes down to the players and executing and making big plays. He’s clearly a guy who makes big plays.”

A couple of other mentions. The fumble by D.J. Shoemate was an absolute killer. He had the ball in the wrong arm and didn’t cover it up. Simple fundamentals. Also, the wide receivers weren’t very good today. I thought Frazer wasn’t sharp, but they dropped a lot of catchable balls. It was a combination, but the wideouts have had better days. Too many drops, and they were critical.

Todman had 102 tough yards, and the Huskies piled up 343 yards on only 68 plays. They just didn’t have the ball enough. And when they did, they had a blocked field goal, perhaps a touchdown pass from Mike Smith dropped, and were generally not sharp.

I thought the team was nervous the first quarter, which I guess is understandable, but was still surprised.

Worst stat of the game was 14-of-19 on third down.

Here’s Lloyd.

“Third down was ridiculous,” Lloyd said. “We would have third and 15 and third and forever and they would come up with a play. We have to look in the mirror. “

Other note:

Scott Lutrus is apparently injured, though UConn and Edsall won’t comment on it until tomorrow. Don’t know what happened. Anyone?
